A big thing for me was my fiancé having to explain to family members why I couldn’t always commit to plans or cancelled at last minute. Some people will infer that her flaking/not committing means she doesn’t like them. This misunderstanding happened a couple times with our mutual (non-medical) friends and his family. Get involved in an activity with people who are not in medical school. I started medical school with a 1 year old and a 3 year old. Unless you are gunning for ortho or you’re just someone who needs to study 80 hours a week to do well it will be nye impossible. But for most people, it seems like you can have a nice balance between school and personal life. Everything just asked to be scheduled, you won’t have true free time but if you schedule free time for yourself and those around you than you’re solid. I’m by far on the apathetic end of the spectrum as far as med students go.
Things to NOT DO could be to talk about their work/school too much, to stop planning stuff/activities/dates because you assume they’re busy, to expect a clear and defined schedule.

Just seems like it would be tough to have the time for a committed relationship during medical school and residency. Medicine has been a very conservative and male dominated field for 80+ years. It’s going to be a couple decades before the slight female majority in medical school reverses that trend. Tell the person honestly what your expectation is from the relationship, and how far in your mind it can go. Dating apps are useful and I know they’re a numbers game but have some class.

I don’t understand why men date just to waste years of a woman’s life with no intentions to settle down and marry. I just decided that i am going to be open minded, and let life take me where i am supposed to get, you know? Especially now, with COVID, it is hard to go out anyway.
